For the second consecutive year, we’re opening the doors of our International School in Nairobi to the public. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about Still I Rise’s mission, meet our team, and discover how our students live and study every day. The event is scheduled for July 28th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, directly on the Nairobi campus.

The day will begin with the TEDx Still I Rise School, “The Power of Why,” scheduled from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, followed by a guided tour of the School and activities designed to allow you to explore our educational model up close. The entire day, including the TEDx talk and tour of the School, will be held in English.

“The Power of Why” will invite speakers and participants to reflect on how asking the right questions can transform individuals, communities, and systems. Hosting TEDxStill I Rise School at Still I Rise International School Nairobi carries a special meaning. Located in Mathare, one of the largest and most overcrowded informal settlement in Africa, the School is the first in the world to offer International Baccalaureate education to refugee and vulnerable children. Here, students who would otherwise be excluded from high-quality education are offered a world-class learning experience, completely free of charge.

In this context, “The Power of Why” reflects the school’s daily approach: encouraging students to question, imagine, and shape a different future. By bringing TEDx into this space, Still I Rise opens the school to the city and connects its students with voices from across Kenya and beyond.
The event will not simply speak about education from the outside. It will take place inside a school where education is already being used as a tool for transformation, proving that powerful ideas can emerge from places too often left out of global conversations.

Vincenzo Del Monaco

Opening Remarks | Ambassador of Italy to Kenya, leading Italy's diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnerships across the East African nation. A decorated career diplomat and academic, he previously served as Ambassador to Montenegro and Armenia, and is widely recognised for his expertise in multilateral relations and for advancing Italy's renewed partnership with Africa.

Azziad Nasenya

A celebrated Kenyan media personality, actress, and content creator, serving as a leading voice in East Africa’s digital culture and entertainment space. A creative entrepreneur and social media pioneer, she transformed a massive viral movement into a powerhouse brand spanning broadcast media, global partnerships, and youth mentorship, and is widely recognized as a trailblazer in Africa’s creator economy and a fierce champion for youth empowerment and digital literacy.

Vimal Shah

Chairman of Bidco Africa, one of East Africa's largest consumer goods conglomerates operating across 14 countries. A self-made industrialist and philanthropist, he built Bidco from a family soap business into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise and is widely recognised as a champion of African entrepreneurship and sustainability.

Nicolò Govoni

Founder and CEO of Still I Rise, an international NGO delivering world-class education to vulnerable and refugee children across the globe. A human rights activist and bestselling author, he transformed a grassroots teaching initiative in a Greek refugee camp into a global network of groundbreaking schools, and is widely recognised as a fierce champion for children's rights and a pioneer in democratizing elite education for the world's most marginalized youth.

PLO Lumumba

Professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba is one of Africa's most prominent legal scholars and advocates for good governance. A PhD in Law from Ghent University, former Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission and author of over 12 books, he is a passionate voice for Pan-Africanism and African solutions to African challenges.

Njuguna Macharia

A leading public speaking coach and debate educator, advancing student empowerment programs across the African continent. A Strathmore Law School alumnus and dedicated youth mentor, he built a dynamic career around competitive academic debating, frequently serving as a core adjudicator for international championships, and is widely recognised as a champion for cultivating the next generation of African leaders and advocates.

Giovanni Volpe

General Counsel and Cofounder of Still I Rise, overseeing the organization's legal affairs and the global macro-management of its educational programs for vulnerable children. An international law expert and humanitarian, he previously worked in international law firms across Paris and Nairobi before leading the opening of groundbreaking schools for refugee and exploited children in Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Colombia, and is widely recognised for his innovative approach to international cooperation and child protection.

Gloria Monga Mfumwabana

An IB MYP 1 student from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, currently studying in Kenya. She enjoys reading, writing, and music, and believes in the power of storytelling to inspire change. In her TEDx talk, Changing Cobalt into Thought, Gloria shares her journey from the cobalt mines to the classroom. Her objective is to encourage greater investment in education and help the world recognize the resilience, potential, and dreams of Congo's children.

Stephen Idriss Onyango

An IB MYP2 student who likes math, sports, and life classes. He enjoys playing basketball, swimming, and solving math problems. Steve is a friendly, hardworking, and kind student who always tries to do his best. His dream is to become a basketball player. He also wants to help people who cannot help themselves and make the world a better place.

Stacy Akisa

A passionate musician. She is an IB MYP 2 student and she wants to inspire people to unlock their purpose through the power of mindset. Drawing her journey from an orphan girl to fleeing Rwanda and rebuilding her life in Kenya, she encourages audiences to turn challenges into opportunities and believe in the future they can create.

Regan Ochieng

An ambitious student, young leader, and aspiring software enginener from Mathare, Nairobi. Passionate about using technology to solve real-world challenges, he is building AI-powered health solutions that help families access timely health information. Regan believes that innovation, leadership, and determination can create lasting change, no matter where you come from.
